How Millennials are Making Happiness at Work Happen
How Millennials are Making Happiness at Work Happen The Key Findings of the Human Experience Gone are the days of punching a time clock and working in a dreary office, only to punch out again in eight hours. Millennials are injecting life into the corporate world and changing the way employees feel about their workplaces. A study conducted by JLL on the Human Experience suggests that an employeeâs environment will affect productivity as well as the entire companyâs performance. The global research project, part of the Future of Work program, included over 7,300 employees with 40 corporate clients in 12 countries. JLL created the Human Experience Model to help employers create experiences in their workplaces that connect on a personal level with their employees, clients and stakeholders. With more millennials entering the workforce, it is critical that organizations make happiness happen to boost engagement, empowerment and fulfillment. According to the JLL research, understanding human experience in the office and workspace is key to differentiating how people engage with an organization. The Key Findings of the Human Experience Engagement, empowerment and fulfillment are the top three priorities that drive human experiences: 1. Engagement fosters a sense of commitment When an employee engages in the companyâs mission and values, it instills commitment. Emotions and values play a role in engagement and commitment. For example, in the U.S., France and Australia, engaged employees feel a sense of pride in the workplace. Up to 64 percent of U.S. employees feel engaged as compared to 40 percent of employees globally. In Japan, dedication spurs staff commitment, while belonging guides employees in Germany. The culture and values are the driving force of engagement and vary between geographical locations. 2. Empowerment will drive change When it comes to the design and layout of a workspace, employees are seeking change â"wanting to step away from the traditional office arrangements. Involving them in the process of workspace set-up can encourage optimal productivity. When it comes to open-space floor plans and unassigned desks, as many as 24 percent of employees donât feel ready at all to make the switch from their enclosed offices and personal space. However, 70 percent of workers in the U.S. would change to an open-plan work space if it nurtures their creativity and advances collaboration and community. 3. Fulfillment is the new happiness The sense of fulfillment is another key finding from the research as work-life balance tends to vary between countries. As many as 69 percent of the survey participants cited happiness as a key factor to fulfillment, followed by recognition at 60 percent, personal learning at 54 percent and creativity at 53 percent. JLL suggests that companies should institute a Chief Happiness Officer to ensure the health and well-being of all employees, and close to 90 percent of workers in the U.S. agree. Additional Factors to Establishing Happiness in the Workplace In addition to the top three pillars of the Human Experience Model, these factors also contribute to developing happiness among employees in the workplace: Entrepreneurism Millennials have the heart of entrepreneurialism. This new generation wants to offer innovative ideas to the world, and employers should foster that spirit. Although large companies attract millennials more than smaller companies, they will have a better chance of retaining their new talent if they promote an entrepreneurial culture. Trust and Kindness The right managerial behaviors seem to make all the difference in the world on how an employee feels about commitment and engagement. For example, if a supervisor demonstrates kindness and trustworthiness toward their team, the employees will respond to the feeling of belonging with pride and commitment to their position and company. Managers can motivate employees to treat each other with kindness by providing collaboration opportunities and fun work events. These instill a sense of trust while reducing stress. Innovative Work Spaces Employees participating in the Human Experience research cited creative work spaces as a key factor in applying and staying with a particular company. Participants requested spaces for concentration, communal areas, collaborative spaces and health-based and family-based environments. For millennials in particular, communal spaces have a strong impact on quality of life and engagement. The findings also uncovered a preference for areas to regenerate and find inspiration, particularly from employees in the U.S., China, India, Italy and South Africa. Around 39 percent of participants want a non-traditional space to help them step away from their desk. With various work spaces reserved for concentration, regeneration and healthy movement, companies can attract and maintain millennial talent. What do you think of the findings? Tips on Writing Peace Corps Resume
Tips on Writing Peace Corps ResumeA writer can create a great resume without much difficulty if he or she knows how to write peace corps resume. Writing a resume will help in finding the right job, which is not easy in today's world, since the competition among job seekers is fierce. In fact, many job hunters have turned to online job portals to find jobs in several companies. However, if you are one of them, you should know how to write a resume and make sure that it does not contain false information.A good way to find out what information you should keep and what you should discard from your resume is to consult with your recruiter. A recruiter can tell you whether you have anything to worry about, or if you are doing just fine in your job search. If your recruiter wants to discuss your resume with you, you can do so without fear. If the recruiter finds something in your resume that can be fixed, he or she can go ahead and fix it so that you are able to get the job that you have be en waiting for.Reaching out to a recruiter is a good idea if you think that there might be something wrong with your resume. Although, you do not want to say anything to your recruiter that will hurt your chances of getting hired, you should speak up if you feel that there is something wrong with your resume. A recruiter has to know everything about you, and if you tell him or her that something is wrong, chances are high that they will fix it. Of course, you would not want to compromise the job that you have been waiting for.Recruiters sometimes turn down qualified applicants simply because they do not like their personal attributes. Such candidates are the ones who do not have an opportunity to make new contacts in their job search and do not have an opportunity to communicate with other candidates. Therefore, you should be careful if you find out that your recruiter is turning you down.It is common for recruiters to reject applicants if they are not qualified for the position tha t they are seeking. You may think that you have no chance of getting a good job, but make sure that you will at least get a few interviews. This way, you will be able to convince recruiters that you deserve the job that you have been waiting for.Writing a peace corps resume should not be a difficult task if you know how to do it well. You can start by taking a look at your education and work experience, and then add some things that might help you stand out in your prospective employer's eyes. By taking a look at your resume, you will be able to see whether it contains all the relevant information that you need to give an overview of your qualifications and accomplishments.

How to Stay Competitive For Freelance And Permanent Jobs
How to Stay Competitive For Freelance And Permanent Jobs In this volatile market, with many job seekers suffering periods of underemployment and outright joblessness, itâs common to freelance when what you really want is a permanent full-time job. But itâs a tricky balance. You need to promote yourself as a consultant in order to continually get work. But you also need to let your network know that youâd prefer to find a full-time job. This brings up many questions: How do you describe what you doâ"consultant or in transition? How do you position your LinkedIn profile? How do you go after both freelance and permanent work without appearing uncommitted? How do you manage your time between looking for consulting jobs and a permanent role? Letâs tackle them one by one. How do you describe what you do? Focus on your activities and results, rather than a specific title. Whether youâre freelance or permanent isnât as important as your skills and expertise. For example, instead of saying youâre a marketing consultant with Company X, you could talk about your involvement with direct mail, digital marketing, new product development, or whatever it is youâre actually doing. Then you can turn your attention to the person youâre speaking with and learn about their interests and needs. The best networking focuses on the other person, not on pitching for your next thing. You need to understand your contacts well enough to move the discussion in a direction where theyâd be able and willing to be helpful. How do you position your LinkedIn profile? When youâre speaking directly with someone during an interview, you can tailor your message in any way. With LinkedIn, you have to decide on one way to represent your work experience for anyone who happens on your profile. Do you call yourself a consultant and possibly get overlooked by employers who assume youâre not interested in full-time work? What if you donât have a separate business entity â" what do you list as the company name? If you list a consulting client as your Company, is this misleading since youâre not actually employed there? As a recruiter and coach, Iâve seen both types of profiles. It matters later in the interview process what the arrangement isâ"a prospective employer will need to know when youâre available, details about your experience, etc. But your LinkedIn profile is simply an initial snapshot. Itâs not meant to be a substitute for a full interview process. Include information thatâs accurate, and state your goals. If youâre not actively consulting, donât say that you are. And if youâre mostly working as a consultant but ideally want to be in-house, definitely list your consulting assignments, and also specify in your headline and or summary that youâre open to full-time positions. How do you go after both freelance and permanent without appearing uncommitted? Freelance work is on the rise, spanning all industries and levels, so itâs more common to find even longtime traditional employees with some consulting stints. Focus on the skills youâre building, the results youâre achieving, and the expertise youâre gaining. Tell your story so that your body of work is the focus, not the work arrangements. In this way, itâs easy to explain why you might be freelancing now but would consider in-house and permanent opportunities. If it makes sense for the work, then youâre open to it. Similarly, if a consulting project comes up thatâs of interest, you keep yourself open to that too. When you make the freelance v. permanent decision about the work, it makes you appear committed to whatâs best for the employer, and thatâs the commitment the employer really cares about. How do you manage your time between looking for consulting jobs and a permanent role? However you decide to position yourselfâ"in your networking introduction, on your LinkedIn profile, in your pitch for whatâs next for youâ"you need to continue to go after opportunities. If you want a permanent job and you can afford not to work for a while, consider concentrating your efforts on a full-time job search. If an attractive consulting project arises, you may want to take itâ"to keep you busy, broaden your network and maintain your skills. It may also lead to a permanent role. On the other hand, if you need to find work quickly, dedicate time to pitching for consulting projects, which are easier to get. You can then make money while continuing job search on the side. Just make sure to allot at least 10-15 hours per week to your job search or your next consulting gig, or else youâll find yourself at the end of your consulting assignment without work.

Is Your Resume Template Holding You Back
Is Your Resume Template Holding You Back Is a resume template a practical method to quickly and simply develop a superb resume? Or, will the utilization of a resume template actually restrain and slow your search for a job? In an employment market that becomes more and more competitive every day, even if you are currently employed you have likely fretted about the security of your company and have at least thought about preparing your resume just in case. If you are unemployed, the need is even more pressing and you understand that to stand out from the multitudes and land a job you must create a resume that is categorically top notch and professional. In either circumstance, the lure to use a resume template is massive. Unfortunately, the use of a resume template frequently backfires. Rather than aiding the job seeker to win the attention of employers, a template causes the opposite as the design and formatting will look exactly like the hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of other resumes in the job market, all based from the same template. Beyond just ensuring that your resume looks like all the other resumes out there, templates are also generated as one-size-fits-all solutions. Do your career, your unique work experience, and your individual goals really fit in a one-size-fits-all format? For the vast majority of people, the answer will be no. Very few professionals have a completely linear, untarnished employment history. If there are any problems in your backgroundsuch as a period of unemployment, too frequent job changes, a demotion, or any number of other challengesa resume template will only accentuate and call attention to the negatives. But, if a resume template isnt a smart choice, what is the solution? While it will take more time and effort, the solution is a custom resume that has been designed and formatted to highlight the pros in your employment background while modulating the possible negatives. At this point, many job hunters decide that the wisest choice is to invest in the services of a professional resume writer. However, many others will opt to continue on their own, putting their best effort into developing a custom resume that is effective and will help them to shine among the multitudes of other job hunters. For these people, there are lots of resources available, including books of example resumes prepared by professional resume writers, websites with example resumes, and online resume writing tutorials and articles, again usually developed by professional writers. Whichever path you select for the creation of your resume, it is almost always in your best interest to veer away from template resumes. While it may seem like a large investment of time (and money if you hire a professional to help you), the returns from creating a one-of-a-kind resume will be more than worth it when you land your dream job at a great salary. 5 Types of Bad Bosses, Explained
5 Types of Bad Bosses, Explained Ive been very fortunate throughout my career in that Ive worked with and for some wonderful companies, had some fantastic mentors and some first-rate colleagues They provided me a solid foundation in leadership, geschftsleben and communication that I use to this day.But if Im honest, I have learned as much if not more from the horrible bosses in my life as I did from the shining stars. Working for or with some of unterstellung people was so painful, if not downright traumatizing, that it burned into my psyche the importance of never doing these things.I encourage you, if you are working for that guy/gal to a) Get out Get out now And/or b) take heart that even the worst of bosses may be teaching you something valuable. On the other hand, maybe you are that guy/gal. If you see yourself in any of these examples, then that alone means you still stand a good chance of changing. Unless they are a dyed-in-the-wool sociopath, most people behave badeanstaltly out of either ignorance or fear.Unfortunately, there is also a tendency for people to become addicted to their perceived power and stop seeing the people they lead as human beings. Sadly, the ones these people hurt the most end up being themselves, because you can fool the world but usually your own conscience will convict you. If any of these ring true for you, consider talking to a professional and changing the course of your leadership which is also your legacy.Bad bosses can take many forms, from the outlandishly horrific, to merely annoying. Below are the top five worst offenders that can be counted on to make their employees lives a living hell.1.The Truth-ChallengedAlmost every leader has to struggle at times with how much information to provide their employees. Those who decide that less transparency is best usually cite competitive vulnerability or lack of employee ability to understand the information as reasons for keeping information close to the vest. As a leader thats up to you, but there is a line between discretion and outright lying. A friend relayed to me this story about untruthful bosses I remember one geschftlicher umgang trip my colleague and I were traveling with our boss, who told us employees that we had to stay at one (cheap and shoddy) hotel, which unfortunately was booked so HE would be staying at the 5-star down the street. Little did he know that we were close friends with the company travel agent and quickly made a call to determine whether that was true (it wasnt). Needless to say, that story made the rounds for years to come Lying about things may seem to be the simple and expedient path but being caught by your employees in a boldface lie can damage your credibility forever. Its not worth it2.The DrunkMost people enjoy a social cocktail every now and then, or maybe even more than one. To each their own, but if you have developed a dependence or an addiction to a mind-altering substance there is no way this wont affect your ca reer. Consider this account from a client I had a wonderful and charismatic mentor at one point in my career whos impact on my life was immeasurable. Unfortunately, this person also drank. A lot. Whenever we would meet, they ensured alcohol was involved and they would keep it flowing, turning every event into a party that others may or may not have wanted to attend. Worse, there were times when wed have long conversations and they would give me assignments and then clearly not remember them later. They would show up smelling of alcohol and their behavior was erratic and unpredictable. This is heartbreaking because many times alcoholics are high-achieving, sensitive and just plain awesome individuals who deal with stress or latent perfectionism by numbing it out. But once it turns into an addiction they become very hard to work for/live with and until they recognize its a problem, life for everyone involved becomes a tornado of destruction.3. The BullyWeve all experienced a bully at some point in our lives. This is the person who belittles you, demeans you or is basically just a jerk to everyone in order to get what they want. The bully likes to throw you off guard and try to catch you up. Bullies are usually fearful people who think the only way to stay ahead is by keeping other people down. They will prey on your weakness and leave you feeling exhausted and demoralized. One of the happiest days of my life was when I was finally laid off by my bully (notethe only way to deal with a bully is to stand up to them, but when they own the company it doesnt mean you will survive the stand-offand thats okay). Bullies think its okay to swear at you, yell at you and blame you for their own inadequacies. My favorite bully line? I dont understand what youre even doing around hereour culture is terrible and people are all leaving. Why dont you do your job and fix our culture?4. The NarcissistThe Narcissist and the Bully are related but separate. Whereas the Bully may not h ave gotten enough hugs growing up, the Narcissist probably got too many. behauptung folks believe to their core that they ARE the smartest, most important people in the room and you exist to serve them. Their ego knows no bounds and you are simply along for the ride. When you encounter a narcissist with a noble vision, it can be exhilarating as the power of their convictions can carry you and the company through a storm and leave you committed to achieving the greatness they know they are destined for. Just know that Narcissists are incapable of giving back, so these relationships usually end up in the painful realization that the only one the Narcissist truly cares about is themselves and you are at best a valuable tool to achieving their goals and if you lose your utility you lose your place in the sun.5.The PoliticoThis may just be the worst of the bad bosses in terms of the emotional disruption. These folks see work and life as something to be spun. They dont trade in power or i nformation so much as relationships and they are very, very good at imitating actual leadership qualities in order to build alliances. You can tell a true leader from a Politico by their fruit. Do they sow unity, growth and respect for people or are those just words that precipitate backbiting and coups? Typically these people use flattery and rhetoric to gain allies but eventually their true colors emerge as they begin to reveal hidden agendas masked as strategies and lies couched as spin. If you have a boss who has thrown their boss or other peers under the bus, stay clear. Do. Not. Trust. Them.Although these are the worst of the worst, here are some other bad boss examples to avoidThe boss who always wants to promote friendly competition between employees in order to drive performance (patronizing at best and downright destructive at worst). The boss who blatantly IMs and texts people while in a one-on-one with you, is unprepared for meetings with you or does other things that mak e it abundantly clear that you or your time are just not that important to her.So if you are working for a truly bad boss, take heart. You are likely learning a whole lot about leadership and yourself, albeit the hard way. Hopefully, you learn that your sanity and serenity is worth any price, and that you dont have to accept abuse from your employer. As well, this experience will indubitably show you the values of honesty, respect, integrity, patience, gentleness, joy, kindness and self-control. At the end of the day, your happiness is an inside job, and you dont need to let bad bosses hijack your emotional well-being no matter what--Carrie Maldonado is the founder of Todays Leadership Solutions aSeattle-based consulting firm dedicated to providingbusiness owners peace of mind and job fulfillment by ensuring their management teams are equipped to run their businesses successfully.A certified executive coach, organizational developmentexpertand HR Professional, Carrie consults with sm all to medium-sized businesses on management, leadership, and recruiting solutions in addition to providing career coaching to managers and executives in transition.
